History and Faith: Reflections of a Mormon Historian
Published in Paperback by Signature Books (August, 1989)
Author: Richard D. Poll
Average review score:

Testament of a Mormon Historian
Richard Poll was one of the pioneers of "The New Mormon History", the intellectual movement of the '60's and '70's that sought a new openness in writing about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This slim book is his legacy and testament. It includes many of his most influential essays, including "What the Church Means to People Like Me." That effort has inspired whole generations of latter-day Saints to stay faithful to their heritage and to seek out the best of worldly learning (this essay can be found online, but every essay in this collection is a gem. This is an absolutely essential book for anyone interested in Mormonism.

A History of the Lute from Antiquity to the Renaissance
Published in Hardcover by Lute Soc of America Inc (May, 2002)
Author: Douglas Alton Smith
Average review score:

Fair treatment for the lute at last!
The lute was the great instrument of the Renaissance, but then it slowly fell from favor, to be revived only recently. Thus it has been neglected by historians. The present book provides a wonderful encyclopedic, yet critical and analytic, account of the lute in Europe in the medieval and Renaissance periods. The author has not covered the Baroque; I hope another volume is forthcoming on that era. Also, the Near Eastern origins and subsequent flourishing of the 'ud--the ancestor of the lute--are not covered, for lack of materials in Western languages. Someone fluent in Arabic and Persian must do that job! Unlike the lute, the 'ud never fell from popularity, and remains a great and major instrument of composition and performance. There is only one real fault in Douglas Smith's book, but it is one that will make strong men weep: There is no discography. Please, Dr. Smith, post a supplementary discography on the Lute Society of America's website. Otherwise, this book is comprehensive. It can be recommended not only to those who (like me) would happily trade the last 150 years of western classical music for a bar of Dowland, but for anyone interested in music history.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (6 CD's)
Published in Audio Cassette by Time Warner AudioBooks (September, 1994)
Author: Douglas Adams
Average review score:

filled with meaning
Listening to the audio CD's has an extra dimension to the book. You do get time to catch your breath. And my CD player is in the car. Somehow I survived. I would say that one great advantage to CD's is the ability to hear how the names are pronounced and you get inflections that intended or not help understand where they are going before they get there. An other advantage is that CD's like acid free paper should outlast the reader.
How many times have you asked a simple question and go the answer as "42." Yep, you are a victim to this book. Many of the clichés and truisms that rival Shakespeare are creeping into our vocabulary. And attitudes - "It has been on file."
If you are the one person that somehow got through life with out reading this series or at least seeing this on TV, then you are in for a treat. Somehow this story is earmarked as sci-fi and I guess it can be in a sense and it has all the elements necessary; it delivers a powerful message to the local Zoning Board.
I will not go though the story, as that is why you are reading the book. You need to sit down for the next sentence.
This book has changed my life.

The Hitchhiker's Quartet
Published in Hardcover by Harmony Books (December, 1986)
Authors: Douglas Adams and Peter Cross
Average review score:

The purist edition!
This omnibus publishing of the Hitchhikers Quartet contains the first four books of the Hitchhikers Trilogy, considered the only true Trilogy by many purists. The series starts with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, then continues with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything and rounds out with So Long and Thanks For All the Fish. This is considered me many the core of the Guide's story, and that "Mostly harmless" takes the story in an unwanted direction and prematurely ends the series with the elimination of 3 of the main characters. Most hardcore Adams purists prefer to leave the story hanging with the possibility of the infinite possibilities possible in an infinite universe.

HMS Saracen
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Arrow Publications (February, 1994)
Author: Douglas Reeman
Average review score:

A tale of two wars
In 1915 HMS Saracen was a new and untried weapon sent to attempt to change the tide in the Dardenalles, which was decidedly against the British. She was designed to fire battleship sized shells far inland to support the army ashore. Also, new and untried was Midshipman Chesney, son of a former Naval officer who had left the Royal Navy under a cloud. Young Chesney is viewed by some as a traditional son of the Royal Navy while to some he is seen as a different sort of future naval officer - a young man who cares about the men entrusted to his leadership. Both SARACEN and Chesney distinguish themselves at Gallipoli but to little avail. At the end of 1915, the British evacuate the peninsula. By this time, SARACEN and Chesney have both returned to the UK, wounded.

25 years later, ship and man are reuninted. In the interim, SARACEN had become outmoded and out dated. Chesney has been put on the beach in an economic retrenchment that saw hundreds of naval officers end their careers prematurely. Chesney had ended up in New Zealand selling farm implements until 1939 and the start of World War II, when he returned to the UK and rejoined the Royal Navy. After several assignments in the UK, Chesney was sent to the Mediterranean where he was to take command of SARACEN. By this time a ship with no real role except to do the odd jobs required in war, moving troops, cargo, fuels everything except shell the enemy far inland. The crew was demoralized and the officers were for the most part, serving their time if the were regulars until something better came along and if they were reservists, wondering what kind of navy they were in.

Chesney undertook to change the ship and crew; with mixed results. A few officers backed his efforts while senior officials wondered if Chesney was not fit to command. He proved his fitness while escorting a convoy of ships from Alexandria to Malta.

The conclusion of the book is one that is both trite and moving at the same time and is an excellent conclusion to this excellent book.

Reeman draws on his naval experience in this theater of the war and uses it quite well. His characters are all very believeable and yet not sterotypes. All his charecters, be they admiral or seaman, are believeable and play their assigned roles well.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Royal Navy and the campaigns it waged in the Mediterranean in the 20th Century.
